OHANA Cirkus backstage

A joint project with Michaela Jetelinová – there was a lot and a lot, one lens would not be enough for it all.

We talk for a while with a guy who says he’s been with the circus since he was 15: „I didn’t learn anything, they taught me everything,“ he motions to the bar behind which the principal is reinforcing himself. „We’re really like a family. Sure, sometimes someone leaves and someone comes in, but the core has been the same for many years. We’re together for ten months, traveling and performing, and then we have two months off and actually spend that together. The circus is life. And this circus is different, you’ll see!“
OHANA really is a bit of a different circus. It’s actually quite different. Dirt and horror. For adults. But it’s definitely not a cheap or B-grade spectacle. Quite the opposite. Everything is professional, for example Matej is a trained actor and you can tell it from his performances. I’m having fun, and so is the sold-out stage, but more on that next time – this part of the series is from the two hours that precede the actual performance.
I mentioned Mathew. He’s the guy I arranged the shoot with, who has a vicious cough today, and who has a truly exceptional charisma. Mates Brestak. A clown as it should be. One of the founders. He had been involved in circus before, but he also had a less traditional concept in his head, and that’s how OHANA – the first horror circus in the Czech Republic could be created. Well, on the same day he stopped being a child clown and started calling himself Dirt. It was 23.9.2017.
Oh, and – similarly to Circus Humberto, I see one really extraordinary thing here – everybody helps everybody, nobody has just one role.
